A City Center for South Burlington

South Burlington, VT
Look at the fantastic success of Church Street in Burlington! How many small cities in this country have had the courage to make their main drag pedestrian only and turn it into a crown jewel? The amazing vitality and spirit of spending time on Church Street any time of year brings great joy to me personally and to my family. So many people's great intentions collaborating and imagining resulted in bringing out the very best in all of us.
South Burlington, VermontWouldn't that be a great model for South Burlington which is sorely in need of a village core, a village center? Market Street connects Hinesburg Road to Dorset Street and seems to be a great spot for just that kind of development. Currently, a cratered dirt road linking the two main roads with woods on all sides. It harkens back to the day when dirt roads ruled this area and I frankly enjoy the teeth rattling short haul. However, I think it would be a sensational gift for our community, if our planners and city officials could coalesce around how to create a vital, pedestrian centric city center in the midst of South Burlington.
